RAYCHEM CABLE REPAIR SLEEVE CRSM-53/13
RAYCHEM CABLE REPAIR SLEEVE CRSM-53/13 – Heavy-Duty Heat-Shrinkable Wraparound Repair System
The RAYCHEM CABLE REPAIR SLEEVE CRSM-53/13 (manufactured by TE Connectivity / Raychem under part series CRSM-53/13) is an industrial-grade, heavy-duty wraparound heat-shrinkable sleeve designed for fast, reliable insulation restoration and outer jacket repair of damaged electrical cables. Unlike standard tubular heat-shrink products that require disconnecting cable terminals, the RAYCHEM CABLE REPAIR SLEEVE CRSM-53/13 features an open-sided wraparound profile. It wraps directly around in-service cables and locks tightly using a corrosion-resistant stainless-steel closure channel.
As shown in the product image, the system consists of a semi-rigid cross-linked polyolefin (XLPO) sleeve coated internally with high-performance hot-melt adhesive. When heated above 125°C, the sleeve shrinks from an expanded diameter of 53 mm down to a recovered diameter of 13 mm (3:1 shrink ratio). Simultaneously, the internal sealant melts and flows to completely fill jacket voids and encapsulate the cable in a moisture-proof, IP68-style seal.
Key Features of the RAYCHEM CABLE REPAIR SLEEVE CRSM-53/13
-
Tool-Free Wraparound Installation: Opens laterally to wrap around damaged cable jackets without requiring cable disconnection or cutting.
-
Stainless-Steel Locking Rail & Channel: Uses a flexible, high-tensile stainless-steel slide-on closure channel that maintains structural integrity under extreme heat and tension.
-
Wide Cable Diameter Coverage (17 mm to 43 mm): Accommodates a broad range of low-voltage and medium-voltage cable sheath diameters.
-
Integrated Hot-Melt Adhesive Coating: Lined with a thermal sealant that bonds aggressively to polymeric, rubber, lead, and aluminum cable oversheaths, blocking moisture ingress.
-
Weather, Chemical & UV Resistance: Formulated with ge 2.5% carbon black content to resist ultraviolet (UV) degradation, soil acids, alkalis, and outdoor weathering.
-
Halogen-Free & Environmentally Safe: Produces non-corrosive, non-toxic smoke during thermal application, making it compliant with RoHS and REACH standards.
Common Applications and Industrial Usage
The fast installation profile, superior dielectric strength, and mechanical toughness of the RAYCHEM CABLE REPAIR SLEEVE CRSM-53/13 make it essential across utility and industrial infrastructure:
-
Underground Direct-Buried Cable Repair: Seals gouged, abraded, or punctured outer jackets on direct-buried low-voltage (1 kV) power cables to block groundwater infiltration.
-
Medium-Voltage Outer Re-Jacketing: Restores outer protective sheaths on MV power distribution cables (up to 35 kV) without disturbing internal insulation layers.
-
Mining, Marine & Industrial Field Maintenance: Repairs severe jacket tears on heavy trailing cables, crane equipment leads, and shipboard power lines subject to high abrasion.
-
Overhead Telecommunication & Utility Jointing: Serves as a durable moisture barrier over inline mechanical splices in exposed cable trays or aerial conduit infrastructure.

Installation Guidelines and Best Practices
SAFETY NOTICE: Wear heat-resistant gloves and protective eyewear when working with open-flame propane torches.
Surface Prep: Thoroughly clean, abrade, and degrease the cable jacket extending at least 75 mm (3 inches) beyond both sides of the damaged zone.
Channel Assembly: Wrap the sleeve around the cable, align the raised plastic rails, and slide the stainless-steel closure channel completely over the joined rails.
Torch Application: Begin heating at the center of the sleeve using a soft yellow flame, moving circumferentially outward toward both ends until the sleeve shrinks completely smooth and adhesive extrudes at both ends.
