CRSM84/20-1000 RAYCHEM CABLE REPAIR SLEEVE – Heavy-Duty Heat-Shrinkable Wraparound System

The CRSM84/20-1000 RAYCHEM CABLE REPAIR SLEEVE (engineered by TE Connectivity / Raychem) is an industrial-grade, halogen-free, heat-shrinkable wraparound sleeve designed for fast, permanent insulation and outer jacket repair on damaged electrical power cables. Unlike continuous tubular heat-shrink products that require cutting conductors or sliding over open cable ends, this wraparound sleeve wraps directly around mounted cables. It locks securely into place using an integrated raised-rail profile closed with a stainless steel channel slider prior to heating.

Upon applying heat with a standard propane torch or heat gun, the cross-linked polyolefin sleeve shrinks in a 3:1 ratio. Simultaneously, its factory-applied internal hot-melt adhesive lining melts and flows into surface voids, forming a void-free, moisture-proof, and environmentally sealed outer layer.

As shown in the product diagram, the sleeve features a smooth black exterior labeled with Raychem markings, a stainless steel closure channel running along its length, and an internal adhesive lining that provides complete environmental encapsulation.

Key Features of the CRSM84/20-1000 RAYCHEM CABLE REPAIR SLEEVE

  • Wraparound Rail & Channel Design: Allows fast field installation around installed or energizable cables without disconnecting conductors or removing cable lugs.

  • High-Shrink Ratio (3:1): Expands to an internal diameter of 84 mm as supplied and recovers down to 20 mm, making a single sleeve suitable for a broad range of cable diameters.

  • Integral Hot-Melt Adhesive: The internal sealant layer bonds tightly to polymeric (XLPE/PVC), rubber, lead, and aluminum cable sheaths to block moisture ingress.

  • UV & Weathering Resistant: Manufactured from carbon-black-stabilized cross-linked polyolefin (ge 2.5% carbon black), protecting it from outdoor UV radiation and harsh weather exposure.

  • Halogen-Free & Corrosion-Proof: Formulated with flame-retardant, halogen-free materials that emit zero corrosive or toxic gases during fires.

  • Unlimited Shelf Life: Retains full material recovery properties indefinitely when stored under normal warehouse conditions.

Common Applications and Practical Usage

The high dielectric strength and mechanical toughness of the CRSM84/20-1000 RAYCHEM CABLE REPAIR SLEEVE make it a preferred choice for electrical utilities, mining, marine, and industrial plant maintenance:

  • Low-Voltage Primary Insulation (1 kV): Replaces damaged primary insulation on single-conductor and multi-conductor low-voltage power cables.

  • Medium-Voltage Outer Jacket Restoration (up to 35 kV): Restores outer jacket integrity and moisture barriers on medium-voltage distribution cables damaged during trenching, pulling, or mechanical impacts.

  • Underground & Submersible Cable Splices: Provides waterproof seals for direct-buried utility cables, cable trays, manholes, and underground duct lines.

  • Corrosion Protection for Metal Sheaths: Covers exposed lead or metal armoring on industrial power feed lines to prevent oxidation and chemical attack.

Installation Guidelines and Best Practices

INSTALLATION TIP: Clean and degrease the cable jacket thoroughly on both sides of the damaged region prior to wrapping to ensure the hot-melt adhesive bonds properly.

  • Sleeve Sizing: Ensure the damaged area plus at least 50 mm (2 in) of sound jacket on each end is covered to achieve a complete waterproof seal.

  • Heating Procedure: Begin shrinking the sleeve in the center using a soft propane flame or heat gun, working outwards toward both ends. This pushes out air and prevents trapped bubbles.

  • Adhesive Indication: Continue heating until the hot-melt adhesive flows visibly out of both ends of the sleeve and along the stainless steel closure channel rail. Allow the joint to cool completely before applying mechanical stress.
